Approximately 4,500 members specializing in residential, commercial, industrial, property management and appraisal services hold membership in MAAR. Those professionals come from approximately 400 real estate focused companies. The association is governed by one president and a 13 board of directors who are elected annually. MAAR has over 16 different committees that meet regularly to handle issues relevant to real estate and the association.
MAAR’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) has been available to members since 1954. The MLS is a computerized data base of residential listings, available to all members 24/7. Normally the system contains more than 8,000 listings. 2004 represented one of MAAAR MLS’s most successful years with over 17,000 residential home sales recorded on the MLS at a value over 2.75 billion dollars. In conjunction with the MLS MAAR also maintains MAARdata.org which is an online tax database with current information from Shelby County appraisers, the Shelby County Register’s office and the Shelby County Assessor’s office.
MAAR teaches through in-house staff and outside real estate professionals numerous courses. Courses include everything from the basics of using the MLS system to obtaining a special designation as a Realtor. MAAR is also active in maintaining an Education Foundation for scholarships for members pursuing professional development and for student scholarships at the University of Memphis.
