<p>The earliest settlers of Chattanooga were Native American Indians, followed by Spanish explorers led by Hernando De Soto. The city was first named “Ross’s Landing” in 1816, after the Chief of the Cherokee Indians, John Ross. In 1838, the named was changed to “Chattanooga,” a term of Native American origin.</p>

<p><strong>US CENSUS FACTS: CHATTANOOGA 2005-2007</strong></p>
<p>HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: As of 2007, Chattanooga had approximately 67,000 households with an average size of 2.3 people. 57% of these households were made of families, with married couples comprising 37% and other families, 20%. The remaining non-family households were madeof people living by themselves or unrelated people living together.</p>
<p>NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: As pf 2005-207, 96% of people in Chattanooga were native born. 63% of these native born citizens were born in Tennessee. Four percent of the people living in Chattanooga city from 2005-2007 there were foreign born. Ninety-six percent was native, including 63 percent who were born in Tennessee. 4% spoke a second language other than English. Of the people who spoke another language, 49% spoke Spanish while 51% spoke another language. 54% of the people reported they did not speak English very fluently.</p>
<p>GEOGRAHIC MOBILITY:  As of 2005 to 2007, 79% of the people in Chattanooga had been living there since the past year. 14% had moved in from another home but in the same county, 3% had moved in from another county, 4% had moved in from a different state, and less than 0.5% had moved in from a different country.</p>
<p>EDUCATION: 82% of people living in Chattanooga had at least finished high school, 23% had a bachelor’s degree of higher, 18% were drop-outs who were either not enrolled in school or did not graduate from high school. From 2005-2007, Total enrolment in all schools in Chattanooga was 35,000. 3,400 were enrolled in Nursery and Kindergarten, 22,000 were enrolled in elementary and high school. 9,400 were enrolled in College or graduate school.</p>

<p>TRAVEL TO WORK: 80% of workers in Chattanooga drove to work, 11% carpooled, 2% commuted to work with an average time of 18.4 minutes commuting time.</p>
<p>INCOME:  The average income of households in Chattanooga was $35,913 as of 2005 to 2007. 76% received earnings while 19% received retirement income other than Social Security. <p>POPULATION: Chattanooga had a total population of 159,000 from 2005 to 2007. 53% or 84,000 were females, 47% or 75,000 were males. The average age was 38.8 years. People under 18 years of age made up 21% of the population, while people 65 years and above made up 15% of the population</p>
<p>HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: Chattanooga had a total of 77,000 housing units from 2005 to 2007. 13% were vacant. 66% of the housing units were single-unit structures, 32% were multi-unit structures, 2% for mobile homes. 17% of the housing units were built since 1990.</p>
<p>OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: Chattanooga had 67,000 occupied housing units with 57% or 30,000, occupied by owners and 43% Ward 29,000, occupied by renters. 5% of households did not have access to telephone service, 13% did not have access to a vehicle, 33% had two vehicles, and 17% had three or more vehicles.</p>
<p>HOUSING COSTS: Mortgaged owners had a median monthly housing cost of $1034, nonmortgaged had $336, and renters had $609. 32% of homeowners had mortgages, 12% did not have mortgages, 43% of renters in Chattanooga spent 30% of their income or higher on housing.</p>
